Belly Buttons and pacifiers

Wednesday was a tough day for Malakai. His belly button stump fell off, separating him from the last vestiges of physical connection to his time in Hotel Hannah. Not to worry, he still gets plenty of physical connection with his beloved mommy, it's just a little harder to understand on the outside than the inside! One has to wonder at how awe-struck the little guy is in his new culture. No point of reference, no experience with sights and sounds, nothing but an instant crash course in AHHH!!!!-What-Is-Going-On-Here?
It's tough enough for us to figure him out. I mean, for us, parenthood right now is like a cross-cultural experience: you're plopped right smack down into a foreign culture where you don't know the language, customs, or what's expected of you. What's he saying? What's that mean? What's he trying to get us to do? Are we doing something wrong? Is everyone looking at us funny? When will we ever figure this little guy out? Language & schedule, those are our big learnings right now. But as tough as it is for us, poor little guy has no point of reference whatsoever to build on.
Oh yea, I got off mark there, I was saying he had a bad day, which is mostly true. We were heading out the door around 8 for Hannah's much needed Dr.'s appointment, and he starts to scream like never before. We'd already decided we were waiting to give him a pacifier, if at all. Suddenly it made much more sense, so we grabbed what we could find and shoved it in his mouth. Put him back in his car seat, strapped him in, and we headed off to the Dr. And for two blissful hours,.... he was perfectly quiet. Silently sucking his new best friend while mommy was helped by the good Doc. But it didn't last, that was the only time all day he really took his new toy. What can we say?
Mommy, daddy, and son are all doing pretty good. We're all sleeping like babies. Two of us are still learning to walk (actually, Hannah is doing really good in this department these days!). And all three of us are full-time students. Thank goodness AMBS doesn't give as many exams as Malakai! But it seems that all three of us get passing grades this week. And we're loving every minute of it!
